Expertise

Dr Jonathan Tammam His research focus is on the nutritional needs of prisoners and adolescents, groups often ignored within a public health context. Leading randomised controlled trials within prison and school settings, exploring the effect of supplementary nutrition on cognitive health and behaviour and investigating the provision and choice of prison food and how it compares with recommended dietary guidance. Areas of expertise include randomised controlled trials, nutrition intervention, and clinical dietetics. Dr Sangeetha Thondre Her research focus includes the role of dietary fibre, on glycaemia, gastric emptying, energy expenditure and satiety. Other interests are in the in vitro methods of starch digestion and the health benefits associated with plant polyphenols. Also she has researched the role of plant protein, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides in various food systems to improve metabolic effects and also the effect of food processing on their functional and sensory characteristics. Dr Shelly Coe Her research focus is on how the diet quality of people with chronic conditions can influence the severity of disease associated symptoms. She has been involved in nutrition related clinical trials and has worked with large cohorts assessing the effect of diet on health outcomes over time. Currently research projects are looking at diet and lifestyle interventions in vulnerable groups and young people, an intervention trial involving young people with cognitive disabilities. She has also assessed mental health outcomes and cognition in both young people and adults.
