We have a growing reputation for globally impactful research. Our university centres for research and knowledge exchange focus on 14 world-shaping disciplines, with each centre committed to advancing understanding through research excellence and knowledge exchange with industry and wider society.
Our research strengths are in areas including:
Sport and health
We have an extensive track-record of funded research informing UK and international health and physical activity guidelines for elite athletes and biomechanics research to understand how physical impairment impacts on performance.
Economic and business growth
We have an impressive portfolio of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships through which we have worked with a range of businesses with outcomes including increased sales, entry into new markets, increased market share and profit.
Net zero and sustainability
Our research into mathematical codes has helped to solve major engineering challenges by modelling the impact of waves on coastlines, structures and renewable energy sources. We are also helping to reduce carbon emissions from different types of peatlands across Europe, and have spent many years modelling aviation emissions and contributing to global aviation policy
