Summary

Background

A major Oil and Gas company is running this Challenge.

Nearly 20% of produced oil sands bitumen are asphaltenes, the precursor of low value petroleum coke for combustion end use, which has a significant GHG footprint. Finding alternative, non-combustion end uses for asphaltenes would expand the bitumen value chain, reduce its life cycle GHG emissions, and benefit industries and societies.

Challenge

A major Oil and Gas company has an opportunity to produce and supply asphaltenes to companies that are developing manufacturing processes for creating high value products from asphaltenes. Asphaltenes provide little to no value to current refiners of bitumen and can increase the cost of refining.

This company would like to support manufacturing technologies to unlock markets for asphaltene derived products and create significant value for both participating companies.

A major Oil and Gas company is looking to receive applications in any area, there is no limitation on types of potential applications. There would be a preference given to ones that can consume large quantity of asphaltenes.

This company would encourage applicants to include additional documentation and specification (where appropriate) in their application.

What's in it for you?

As one of the largest oil sands producer, this company has the capability to provide long-term stable supply of asphaltenes to companies manufacturing products, as well as to support their technology development and scale up leading to additional value. Partnership or Joint Venture could be created to bring the ideas to market.
