Additive Manufacturing Printhead for Exotic Materials

Recent adaptations to fused deposition modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have created pathways for the printing of exotic materials, including those that are electrically or magnetically oriented or chemically endo or exothermic. AM printing of piezoelectric materials in the form of sensors is potentially useful for the areas of integrated and personal smart devices in industries from aerospace to bioscience; however, factors such as material degradation, arcing, and burning during fabrication continue to present barriers for production scale efforts.

Thorium

Modern business needs for data management have resulted in a surge in the fields of data science, machine learning, and big data platforms. These business needs (e.g. marketing, advertising, and hiring) are essential to both end-products and business critical operations and require large amounts of computational resources. Improper allocation and scheduling of these resources can cost companies millions of dollars per year. Sub-optimal resource allocation is often time consuming to diagnose and requires experienced engineers many weeks to solve. While modern infrastructure-as-a-service platforms, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud provide easy interfaces for scaling computational needs, efficient allocation and scheduling of these resources are still necessary to efficiently utilize them. Thorium fills these data management gaps.

Quenching of Unincorporated Amplification Signal Reporters (QUASR)

Rapid changes in how the world must react to pandemics has led to an unprecedented effort to develop rapid, easy to interpret point-of-care tests that meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. To address this critical need, Sandia National Laboratories developed QUASR (Quenching of Unincorporated Amplification Signal Reporters), a technique to significantly enhance the favorable characteristics of LAMP (Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification). Combining these capabilities enables SmartLAMP, a smartphone-based deployable diagnostic device to create a simple, inexpensive, and robust system to quickly assess large and potentially dangerous public health situations.

Plasma Micronozzle Adapter

Heightened interest in next-generation printable and flexible electronics is accelerating research and development in rapid and highly repeatable additive manufacturing (AM) processes and capabilities. Plasma jet printing, which converts a desired print material into a low temperature plasma for deposition, is well positioned for electronics manufacturing due to its ability to print a wide range of materials onto diverse surface materials from a single platform. However, a key limitation of existing plasma jet printers is their large minimum printed line widths (150-200 microns), which makes achieving the small spot sizes and high print resolutions needed for advanced electronics more difficult. Advancements are needed in plasma jet printing to attain finer line geometries.

Highly Conductive, High Resolution Printed Electrical Traces and Components

Electrical traces and conductive components are essential features of electronic devices, power electronics, and printed circuit boards. Specific characteristics such as trace width and thickness can greatly influence device performance factors such as interference, signal integrity, and cost. Emerging trends in advanced electronics are creating new demand for high conductivity components that can be formed over varied or uneven surfaces. To date, high resolution (10 micron) traces have been produced with aerosol jet printing (AJP) but so far these methods cannot achieve the conductivity needed.

Wire Rivet

There is a need to provide a simple and quick electrical connection to one or many conductive substrates that does not require abrasion of the substrate surface or a complicated assembly process requiring thread tapping, threaded studs, bolts, nuts, washers, or two-hand access. The Wire Rivet concept is a simple modification to a common mechanical fastener that provides both a robust mechanical and electrical connection between a wire and substrate(s).
