An adaptable low power permanent magnet quadrupole for particle accelerators
About
STFC have developed the ZEPTO (ZEro Power Tunable Optics) permanent magnet quadrupole which does not require electrical power to operate. The ZEPTO magnet uses the vertical movement of permanent magnets to achieve the required gradient range and provide a high quality, adjustable magnetic field. The design is very adaptable and has the potential to be modified for many different applications. The unique permanent magnet technology offers a world leading capability in tunability and energy range. The magnet design was developed to overcome the current challenge facing the particle accelerator sector: the high constant power requirements of electromagnets which are reaching the extent of their energy range and limiting future accelerator upgrades. The ZEPTO magnets are energised using magnetised materials therefore do not need power supplies, coils, cooling water, or the associated infrastructure required for electromagnets. Unlike other permanent magnets, the ZEPTO designs have the capability for very high strength (upto 60 T/m assuming 27 mm pole gap) and/or large tuneable ranges (8% to 100% tuneable). In addition, the magnet design is scalable with the potential to be adapted for applications over a range of different energies.
