A small, reusable alarm for decannulation is an elegant solution that will provide relief to caregivers both in clinical and at-home settings.

About

Invention Novelty This invention describes a reusable alarm for sensing accidental tracheostomy decannulation. Value Proposition Approximately 100,000 tracheostomies are performed each year in the U.S.  Though accidental decannulations only occur in approximately 4/1000 days of cannulation, the associated mortality is high.  Furthermore, tracheostomy tube replacement becomes difficult with time due to contraction of the stoma.  Because of the high consequences of accidental decannulation physicians go to extreme measures - such as suturing the tracheostomy flange in place - to prevent detachment.  A small, reusable alarm for decannulation is an elegant solution that will provide relief to caregivers both in clinical and at-home settings. This novel invention provides the following advantages: Alarms when a tracheostomy tube has become dislodged. Can be used in both a clinical and at-home setting. Can be used with multiple brands of tracheostomy tube. Reusable. Alarms remotely so the caregiver need not be in the patient's room to be notified of dislodgement.
