Overview Tobacco use for Indigenous Australians is 2.5 times greater than the non-Indigenous population. A 2012 report highlighted that progress made against tobacco use is at a standstill and youth smoking is again on the rise. Inventor PhD Candidate Kristin Carson’s research has identified several barriers and enablers to smoking cessation and tobacco prevention programs targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Benefits Her findings have led to successful improvements in clinical practice and policy development. A recently acquired NHMRC Fellowship (co-funded by Cancer Australia) will further translate her research into training for health professionals. In order to achieve long-term change Kristin’s research is supporting government to develop healthy lifestyle programs and make further improvements to public smoking policies.
