SpheriSomes® are novel, multi-lamellar microparticles which consist entirely of naturally occurring fatty acids and an organic base.

About

SpheriSome® microspheres consist entirely of the naturally antimicrobial fatty acid, sebacic acid which is cross-linked with an approved food preservative poly-epsilon-lysine using our patented technology. The base component is poly-epsilon-lysine which is well-documented in the scientific literature as an antimicrobial peptide discovered in Japan in the 1980s. The antibacterial and anti-fungal properties of our unique cross-linked microparticles are well proven and the underlying technology patented by the company in 2012 and is acknowledged in many peer reviewed publications in the scientific literature. A patent covering the SpheriSome® technology specifically for this type of application was granted in 2019. SpheriSomes® can be further collaboratively engineered or further developed for specific uses, for example, 3D scaffolds, coatings, film, gels, sprays, creams, solutions and suspensions to meet customer specifications. Other amino acid combinations, incorporation of active substances into the multi-laminar layers to further customise to expand the initial formulations to meet the required performance criteria.

Key Benefits

SpheriSomes® provide a foundation upon which a multiplicity of materials and or products can be developed which exploit its inherent properties.

Applications

SpheriSomes® have been developed by SpheriTech, an independent research, development, and manufacturing company focused on developing novel and innovative polymeric materials which offer wide-ranging application solutions to clients to the benefit of multiple target markets such as life science research, biotechnology, and healthcare industries. Added benefit is the transfer of knowledge in its application from one market to another. In respect of targeting the healthcare and pharmaceutical market we can address each of the key areas sought as follows; Area 1 – ‘improving the skin’s resilience through life’ SpheriSomes® provide a foundation upon which a multiplicity of materials and or products can be developed which exploit its inherent antimicrobial properties. In addition, SpheriSomes® can be used to deliver other active ingredients to the skin including common ingredients such as niacinamide (vitamin B3), ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which have been proven over decades, if not centuries to be important for skin repair. Vitamin C for example is essential for the biosynthesis of collagen and has antioxidant properties, whilst vitamin B3 stimulates the release of natural ‘defensins’ by keratinocytes (skin cells). SpheriSomes® can also be used to carry and deliver sunscreens, palmityl peptides, and moisturising agents to the skin. Area 2 – ‘improve the health, resilience and appearance of the skin’ SpheriSomes® in this formulation consist of primarily of a naturally derived peptide already manufactured on a multi-tonne scale as a food preservative. The secondary cross-linking agent, sebacic acid is sourced from vegetable oils. However, as the name suggests, sebacic acid is a lipid excreted from sebaceous glands on the skin and helps to keep us water-proof. Spheritech are recognised as world leaders in peptide synthesis so it is inevitable that SpheriSomes® have been shown to immobilised peptides and proteins beneficial to the skin. Lipophilic molecules such as retinoids are readily absorbed into SpheriSomes® for a sustained release. Area 3 – ‘better performing skin’ As described for Area 1, SpheriSomes® can be used to immobilise vitamin B3 which is a common ingredient in treatment of spots and acne. SpheriSomes® are hydrophilic microparticles small enough to get trapped in the crevices of the skin remaining there for long periods, retaining moisture and delivering active ingredients simultaneously. The fatty acids in SpheriSomes® are actually the primary treatment for spots. Area 4 – ‘enhance transdermal delivery’ SpheriSomes® can be very precisely controlled to provide a controlled and sustained release of active ingredients. This has already been demonstrated in clinical studies for healthcare applications and is currently under development for topical veterinary applications, so translation of these properties for skin care is readily achieved. The ultimate benefit is the ability to work with clients such as COTY and or your Third-Party suppliers to understand, design and developed specific tailored solutions.
