About

Background: The importance of proper sleep to one’s health cannot be overstated, and because of their key roles in the healthcare system, nurses have the opportunity to educate patients on the science behind sleep. Further, sleep deprivation and disrupted body rhythms caused by shift work leads to major physiological and psychological effects on the health of nurses themselves, which can undermine their ability to provide a high standard of care to patients. Unfortunately, sleep education is not a part of the established curricula at most nursing schools. However, in a 2013 survey of 57 nursing students, 93 percent said that education about sleep and sleep disorders was important to them as a part of their learning experience.  Invention: This sleep education program is both comprehensive enough to make a real difference in the lives of nursing students and nimble enough to translate into a nursing school’s existing curriculum. This 10-hour program includes modules that students can easily use for web-based virtual guided self-learning and simulation-based discussion in an interactive classroom setting. Nursing schools that translate this program into their curriculum will lay a foundation for improving the healthcare of patients and decreasing the health risks of nurses as care providers. Features/Advantages: •    Works with online course management systems like Canvas and Blackboard Vista •    Succinct format allows for easy integration into the established curriculum •    Complementary components allow for most effective method of teaching •    Simulation-based education in nursing has proven to be effective in generating an active learner response and creating a significant and memorable learning experience Applications: •    Can be compatible with one course or spread out over years of education. •    Can be applied to both undergraduate and graduate nursing school curricula. •    Helps nurses improve not only the health of patients under their care but also their own health.
