Provides a dual function within the electric vehicle for minimizing the number of components within the electric vehicle's power circuit
About
This technology includes an apparatus connected to an energy storage device for powering an electric motor and optionally providing a warming function for the energy storage device. The apparatus includes a circuit connected to the electric motor and the energy storage device for generating a current and a switching device associated with the circuit for selectively directing the current to one of the electric motor or the energy storage device. The circuit also includes a storage circuit with a resonating frequency for storing energy. A controller is provided for operating the switching device. In operation, energy is transferred from the energy storage device to the storage circuit while the switching device is in the open state, and returned from the storage circuit to the energy storage device while the switching device is in the closed state
Key Benefits
Novel system provides advantages including: 1. Circuit capable of warming the battery used for powering the electric vehicle during cold environmental conditions 2. Easily incorporated with the existing power circuitry for the electric vehicle 3. Provides a dual function within the electric vehicle for minimizing the number of components within the electric vehicle's power circuit 4. Energy is transferred from the energy storage device to the storage circuit while the switching device is in the open state, and returned from the storage circuit to the energy storage device while the switching device is in the closed state 5. Batteries to be heated include a 12 volt combustion engine vehicle starter battery; 600 volt battery pack for electric vehicles; and lithium ion (Li-Ion) battery because of its high power and light weight characteristics. In addition, a variety of energy storage devices including NiCad, NiMH or even lead acid batteries can utilize the circuit of the present invention to provide highly efficient warming.
