A process to utilize the residual cellulose in applications to develop controlled long-term fertilizer delivery and to produce pellets that can be used as polymeric raw materials

About

PROBLEM / OPPORTUNITY: The generation of waste cellulose from sludge in the paper industry is very high (tens of tons per day), which generates environmental problems such as the requirement of large space during soil disposal or its instability due to degradation in the open. Inert materials are incorporated into different elements made of composite materials with high polymer content, however, due to the high costs of raw materials, residual cellulose is evaluated as a replacement for substances such as calcium carbonate, organic and synthetic fibers, without compromising the mechanical strength of the finished products. On the other hand, the capacity of the residual cellulose to participate in the formation of controlled release hydrogels of chemical substances, which allows it to be used in a new device that reduces the losses by absorption, leaching, volatilization, and evaporation of the fertilizers applied in arable land. This application generates a reduction in costs in the agricultural production sector and the associated environmental effects. OBJECTIVE 1. Elaborate polymer matrix composites from residual cellulose with PVC, PE, RP or PS 2. Elaborate slow release fertilizers of N and P for application in agricultural production soils. DETAILS The residual cellulose from paper mill sludge is incorporated into the polymeric material, after drying and grinding. The percentage incorporated depends on the polymer and the subsequent use of the composite material; It is possible to make an extrusion and subsequent pelletizing to facilitate the parts manufacturing processes. In the case of slow-release fertilizer, the residual cellulose forms the basis of the fertilizer and is incorporated during the manufacture thereof, which can have several presentations such as granules or powders.

Key Benefits

Controlled liberation of nutrients into the soil Prolonged fertilization times Mitigation of the contamination to superficial and underground water sources Reduction of the impact of residual cellulose waste Reduction in costs for agricultors Added value to pulp and paper companies by transforming a waste into an opportunity
