The bone marrow is a rich source of stem cells that have the potential to differentiate into various other cell types and has played an important role in therapies for diseases such as leukaemia. Through further research into mechanisms regulating how stem cells exit the bone marrow, Prof Sara Rankin is developing a pharmaceutical approach to direct stem cells in the body to promote self-healing. We have a granted patent in the USA claiming methods of mobilising stem cells for a variety of purposes, such as restoring damaged tissue, accelerating bone repair and optimising stem cell harvesting.
