Quas contains up to 500 billion live bacteria per serving from over 100 types of bacteria, making it the most concentrated and most strain-diverse probiotic product in the UK today

About

Unlike the majority of the mainstream probiotic beverages, kvass made by Quas is lactose-free, caffeine-free and vegan. Probiotic drinks made by large brands such as Actimel, Yakult and Biomel only contain 1-3 types of probiotic bacteria, which is simply insufficient to increase the diversity of the gut microbiota. The recently increased popularity of kombucha beverages is a good example of how healthy everyday probiotic beverages can take over the masses. However, the kombucha’s culture is rich in acetic acid-producing bacteria, which results in a vinegary taste that is off-putting for customers. More importantly, the substrate used for kombucha production (tea and sugar), simply does not contain the microbial diversity that would match the lost diversity in the Western population. In contrast, malts and vegetables that could be used for the production of kvass provide a natural environment for rapid cultivation of the microbial community that well matches the lost community of the gut. Quas contains up to 500 billion live bacteria per serving from over 100 types of bacteria, making it the most concentrated and most strain-diverse probiotic product in the UK today.

Key Benefits

The human gut microbiome is made of about 1,000 different types of microorganisms, which co-specialised with humans over millions of years of evolution. It has become clear that the microbiome influences all aspects of human biology and, most importantly, the immune system. The modern Western lifestyle with its abundance of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor processed foods, antibiotic use and increased sanitation has contributed to alterations in the microbiota that are linked to the deterioration of human health. These changes are causative or contributing factors to the many non-communicable chronic diseases presently rising in Western societies, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, allergies and chronic respiratory diseases, many of which are partially or entirely driven by a misregulated immune system. Fermented foods, such as kefir and kimchi, have gained popularity as reports of potential health benefits in animal models and humans have emerged. Large cohort studies, as well as limited interventional studies, have linked the consumption of fermented foods with increased gut microbiome diversity and improved immune system, which resulted in weight maintenance and decreased risks of diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. At Quas we aim to reduce the risks of non-communicable diseases in the Western population by improving gut health using a delicious everyday non-alcoholic beverage that contains hundreds of types of probiotic bacteria. Our MVP is kvass - a historical beverage made using mixed fermentation of malts such as rye and barley. Each can of Quas contains 500 billion live bacteria, providing our customers not only a superior probiotic product but also a 50- to 250-fold better value for money (billions of live bacteria per GBP) compared with our competitors.

Applications

The bacterial formulation used in Quas can be applied in beverages, shots, and potentially in powder/pill and jelly formulations.
