This project recycles wasted ceramic powder in cement brick manufacturing and finalizes the optimum mix design. The design can improve bricks' properties and sustainability.

About

Ceramic waste powder (CWP) is generated during the cutting and polishing of ceramic products (e.g., ceramic tiles), and the global generation of such waste exceeds 22 billion tons in 2018. The waste is mainly disposed into landfills, but such disposal can cause environmental problems such as soil, air, and groundwater pollution. CWP can be collected and used to replace cement in concrete brick production at a replacement rate of 10%. We have found that such a design can increase the brick's strength by 10%. It also has limited changes in concrete brick's durability and can increase brick's thermal and fire resistance. In the meanwhile, the product can reduce CO2 emissions and costs due to cement production and purchasing.

Key Benefits

The project can benefit the following stakeholders: (1) Environmental protection authorities, waste management companies, and environmental consulting companies. The project can reduce the environmental contamination caused by ceramic waste powder by extending its potential use in brick material. The results can help the decision-making of environment protection authorities, waste management companies, and environmental consulting companies. (2) Brick manufacturer and concrete manufacturer. The proposed design can reduce concrete and concrete brick manufacturing costs and increase their manufacturing sustainability. It can also increase the concrete brick's strength and durability and benefit the manufacturer. (3) Builder. The innovative brick design can be used as a performance-based solution for building construction and help the building achieve better structural reliability and energy rating. (4) Homeowners and property managers. The increment of brick durability can also lead to less brick maintenance time and cost, thus benefiting homeowners and property managers when they have brick structural components in their buildings.
