A very fast, very sensitive single-photon, time-resolving detector for photons in wavelengths from the visible to the far infrared, using a super-conducting material. Single photon detectors may be used in systems for free space and satellite communications and studies of weak luminescence and semiconductor device testing. They may also be used in quantum cryptographic systems, which would support the most secure method of communication possible, guaranteed by the inviolability of the laws of quantum mechanics.
