Potential for effective therapy to promote neuronal growth after injury/disease, provides neuronal guidance and stimulates nerve growth, development leading to treatment of traumas
About
What it is NM23 – an amino acid residue with proven ability to promote neuronal growth. The benefit Provides potential for effective therapeutic to promote neuronal growth after injury or disease, NM23 provide both neuronal guidance and stimulates nerve growth, which current compounds/ approaches do not, further development may lead to advances in the treatment of major traumas such as spinal injuries. Background Neuronal growth is regulated by the presence of biomaterials, which are either permissive or inhibitory to such growth, and of neuro-attractive or neuro-repellent diffusible factors. These regulatory mechanisms have limitations individually in promoting neuronal tissue repair following injury or disease. Hence, the presence of a permissive biomaterial does not in itself stimulate sufficient nerve growth, whilst diffusible factors may not provide appropriate neuronal guidance, leading to dysregulated growth. However, such limitations will be overcome by materials or agents that are able both to stimulate neuronal growth and also provide appropriate direction to that growth.. Nm23 is a 152 amino acid residue polypeptide which when presented as an extracellular substrate is able to promote the growth of neurons to a greater extent than is achieved in the absence of nm23, and over other extracellular materials considered permissive for nerve growth, such as type i collagen.
