About

Chalcogenide Hybrid Organic/Inorganic (CHIPs) and Nanocomposites For Long-Wave Infrared Imaging and Optical Applications Case ID: UA18-234 Invention: This invention uses chalcogenide hybrid organic/inorganic polymers (CHIPs), compounds with a high refractive indexes, to create an infrared long pass filter for infrared light with wavelengths from 8 to 12 microns. Background: Infrared long pass filters are used primarily in imaging and sensing tools. These filters are often made with either Germanium or chalcogenide glass, both of which are expensive and difficult to process. In the automotive industry specifically, these issues make it difficult for them to justify the use of infrared imaging and sensing tools outside their top of the line models. CHIPs provide a new material for imaging and sensing tools that is both inexpensive and effective. The ability to create sensors with CHIPs allows these tools to be placed in more automobiles, making the road a safer place. Furthermore, with reduced costs, it is possible to find more applications for these sensors that wouldn't have been considered before.
