Aelius Biotech specialise in lab models of the digestive tract, offering a suite of predictive systems to help understand and develop formulations during vital pre-clinical stages to improve and de-risk product development and get successful products to market. Aelius Biotech have developed a novel, patented model gut system (PCT/GB2014/053449) that simulates the human digestive tract. This system and associated assays provide unique tools for the study of drug delivery, nutrient absorption and digestive biology.  The Aelius Biotech system is the only available model capable of simulating the digestive lumen, mucus barrier and absorptive epithelia in a single integrated system. Associated screening assays can be used with the platform to identify high-value bioactive functions such as enzyme modulation, and validate functional effects, release profiles and absorption kinetics.  The model has been used in numerous projects, correctly predicting the outcome of a multiple human trials. The system provides a platform which has been used to test nanoparticle drug delivery, functional foods, and provides a functional and relevant model of digestion – as evidenced by the ability of the system to digest complex mixed meals. With our lab models of the gastrointestinal tract, we can test how foods, functional foods and bioactives affect and are affected by the processes of digestion, mucus permeation and absorption.
