Tracheostomy is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures on the critically ill patient. The procedure involves making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck, and opening a direct airway through an incision in the trachea. In the UK an estimated 20,000 tracheostomies are performed each year, with between 120,000 and 165,000 performed in the US, a similar number for Western Europe and 6-9,000 in Australia. Current percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy devices use either a single or a series of dilators (Ciaglia method), or a forcep (Griggs) both of which have limitations. The force used in the Ciaglia method can lead to cartilage ring fracture, posterior tracheal wall perforation and anterior tracheal wall damage due to the curve scratching the front of the trachea. The Griggs method carries an increased risk of bleeding through tearing of tissue due to the non-uniform application of force to the opening, damaging the tracheal cartilage rings or connecting tissue HandyTrak, a new medical device overcomes these limitations offering a safe and simple method of opening the trachea. It has been developed by a UK company and is a new development in the tracheostomy field invented by clinicians. The technology uses a novel dilation mechanism that allows for a controlled opening, evenly distributing the force to the tracheal rings and reducing force and contact against the rear wall, potentially reducing the trauma associated with other devices on the market. The packaged kit will be ready for distribution in CE marked territories in June 2017.
