The use of this strain could allow further insight into the in vivo function of FIZZ1 in various disease processes.

About

Description FIZZ1 (found in inflammatory zone) is a cysteine rich secreted protein. It is encoded by a gene known as Retnla or Remα. Upon deletion or overexpression of the gene, researchers have found that it has many roles in the regulation of fibrosis, pulmonary allergic inflammation, immune response, tissue remodeling, wound healing, and infection. However, most of the studies to date have been conducted in vitro. Of the studies that have looked at the role of FIZZ1 in vivo a specific role or mechanism of action of FIZZ1 has yet to be elucidated. Therefore, more studies need to be done to determine the functionality of FIZZ1 in various disease processes. FIZZ1 knockout mice To facilitate the study of FIZZ1, a knockout mice strain has been produced. The Retnla gene has only been replaced with an antibiotic marker leaving the strain free of any other markers. This is an improvement on other strains which insert an intact β-galactosidase gene along with an antibiotic marker in the place of Retnla. The addition of this gene could lead to unforeseen effects and phenotypic complications due to its enzymatic activity. This strain will allow researchers to study various diseases in which FIZZ1 has been implicated to have a role. The use of this strain could allow further insight into the in vivo function of FIZZ1 in various disease processes.
