First, we aimed at revolutionizing the single-used coffee pod industry because this poses an imminent problem. 60 billion plastic and aluminium coffee pods end up in landfills worldwide every year and they take more than 500 years to decompose. We have now developed a novel home-compostable, plant-based, biopolymeric composite that can withstand temperatures up to 100oC, pressures up to 19 bar, increased strength, has a high O2 barrier and is food safe by European standards. This plant-based material allows for full compostability leaving no toxic traces when biodegraded. Its diverse characteristics confer the material interesting properties which can also be applied to other industries.
