A full 2-way 3D telepresence solution using depth cameras and Looking Glass light field displays. Participants on both ends can see and interact with each other in real-time.
About
Holoxica created the first glasses-free 3D videoconferencing solution for remote working. Traditional 2D videoconferencing delivers an unrealistic “face to face” experience which makes reading body language and facial expressions difficult. 3D videoconferencing solutions proposed to date have relied on a fabricated environment and been driven by 3D headsets or glasses, which many people find intrusive and can cause motion sickness. Holoxica’s solution uses off the shelf components such as a depth camera with Looking Glass light field 3D display technology to create motion video versions of holographic images, enabling people to feel like they are genuinely in the room with someone else when video conferencing with them and creating the depth of field typically associated with 3D without the need for headsets or artificial environments. Holoxica offers the Looking Glass Factory family of holographic 3D Light Field Displays, from 7.9" to 32" display sizes. No AR/VR headsets are required and many people can have a unique 3D experience simultaneously, just like "Star Wars". These second generation displays feature improved visual quality, more features and lower pricing. All displays work with our suite of holographic software, including Holoviewer, Volumeviewer and Telepresence. The display sizes include 7.9", 15.6" and 32" diagonal. The viewing angle is over 55 degrees. The displays are based on LCDs with an optical layer to produce a dense "field" of light rays. Many people can view the 3D image simultaneously without having to wear cumbersome glasses or headsets.
Key Benefits
• Delivers a more realistic human interaction within a real environment rather than a virtual world • No requirement for participants to have headsets – reducing cost of implementation, risk of motion sickness and risk of contamination of headsets. • Uses off-the-shelf technology • Makes it simpler to read non-verbal communication • Low cost implementation During the global pandemic the business world has turned to videoconferencing to conduct meetings and conversations, but many people are currently suffering from “Zoom fatigue”. This is not only caused by the sheer volume of meetings but also because it takes more effort to process someone’s non-verbal cues in 2D than 3D. Holoxica won an Innovate UK Grant to create a 3D teleconferencing solution that did not rely on headsets, but delivered a more natural, face-to-face experience.
