About
Winners of the 2024 Sheffield Business Awards - Environmental Impact Category
We are a not for profit social enterprise whose mission is to end food waste. We do this by partnering with local retailers, wholesalers, distributors and farmers to rescue surplus food. We use this food creatively in a variety of ways described below. We also have two industrial sized glass houses to locally grow some of our own produce to utilise across our operations.
Parts of our business powered by the food we collect and grow:
- 2 cafes serving mon-fri lunch services
-1 large market place at warehouse + 2 smaller versions at the cafes. Warehouse open 362 days a year. We also have rotary pop-up markets (12 per month) in areas of low food provision in the city.
-2 industrial sized glass houses to grow local produce to use in the above.
-frozen meal (Just meals) production. We produce 4 dietary types of frozen meals made from food we collect. Compostable packaging , all ingredients/allergens, production site and dates listed on recyclable outer sleeve. We stock these at partner hubs around the city like the Children's Hospital, community centres, churches, small independent health food stores and others.
-We bring people together through food. We are also designing skills building courses like cooking, knife skills, gardening and barista so that people can better utilise food in their homes and produce their own.
All of our services operate on a pay what you can afford basis. Minimum £1 and any extra donations are welcome but completely optional. As we are a not for profit, any and all donations just go back into covering our costs.
Key Benefits

-educate about food waste and reduce it
-strengthen ties to communities and local/national food businesses
Applications
Members of the communities of Sheffield and Rotherham. We address areas with low income and food insecurity/provision. However, everyone is welcome at Food Works and we have supporters, volunteers and customers from all walks of life. The only way to build a sustainable system is to involve everyone. If you don't involve all stakeholders then it is impossible for sustainability to exist.
