Videos and images taken with fisheye lenses have a wide view angle of around 180 degrees, while restricted by standard rectilinear lenses normal videos and images can only achieve a view angle of up to 90-100 degrees. The benefit of wide view angle of fisheye lenses is however comprised by significant barrel distortions. Without loss of visual information, this novel technique automatically recovers natural looking videos and images from a fisheye input. The algorithm is highly efficient, supporting interactive and real-time applications. The potential use of this new technique has been recognized but not restricted to surveillance monitoring, machine vision and biomedical scanning devices.
