Entropix has unique skills in the development of enzymes using engineering biology. We have developed enzymes capable of degrading PET at lab scale.
About
Entropix is a young UK biotech company based and we’re using machine learning to accelerate the development of enzymes. Our ambition is to develop enzymes that are capable of degrading a wide range of plastics. However, our technology can also be used in a variety of sectors and our first commercial contracts have been in diagnostics and life sciences.
Key Benefits
In recent years, several groups have started to investigate the potential to use enzymes for plastics recycling including PET. In conventional mechanical recycling of PET, it is difficult to recycle coloured plastics, multilayer materials and flexible packaging. This leads to an accumulation of impurities in recycled PET which must be supplemented by virgin material. In enzymatic recycling, PET can be returned to its original raw materials - Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol without using unsustainable chemicals or solvents. Enzymes can handle a wide range of plastic samples, including coloured and mixed materials.
Applications
Entropix would like to collaborate with plastics recycling companies and major brands who have an interest in developing sustainable solutions for handling waste plastics by using enzymes to turn the plastics back into their original raw materials, giving potentially infinite recyclability.
