Simple to use at Roadside/ Trackside etc. Saliva / Spit test - no blood/ urine analysis Provides instant "Yes/ No" qualitative answer - i.e "presence of a compound"
About
About Developed within a Scottish Enterprise funded Proof of Concept programme, Researchers at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland) have developed an innovative method for the presumptive detection of illegal drugs such as narcotics in saliva. using a novel nano-particle approach and a fluorescence measurement the prototype system provides a visual "Yes/ no" on whether or not a drug candidate such as Cocaine is present in a sample. Drug driving or driving under the influence of drugs is an increasing problem and is difficult to detect without directly testing a sample of blood/ urine. Saliva testing reduces the risk of contamination and the danger to those collecting the samples from potentially dangerous drunk / drugged individuals. This technology has the potential to provide and immediate indicative "Yes/ No" answer at the roadside, trackside or workplace that should be followed up with a legally recognised quantitative method for detecting drugs. Key Benefits Simple to use at Roadside/ Trackside etc. Saliva / Spit test - no blood/ urine analysis Provides instant "Yes/ No" qualitative answer - i.e "presence of a compound" No transfer of samples - little risk of cross-contamination Applications Law enforcement - Roadside testing of drivers Athletics testing - Athletes / Track & Field Safety issues - random testing in the work place Animal testing - Race Horses, Dogs etc. IP Status Part of Heriot-Watt "Open for Business" IP portfolio; this technology is offered on a "worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable royalty free basis only" and is subject to the terms and conditions of a signed agreement between the licensor and the University. Developed within a Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept project, comprehensive technical documents are supported by a granted US patent and pending patents in the EU region. Technical support from the University is available through paid consultancy where required.
