About

Description: The technology presented here is a unique probe for the diagnosis of methicillin. This probe represents an important step forward in researcher?s ability to rapidly and effectively detect the presence of antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections.   Applications: The DNA probes described herein have a unique shape and sequence; these characteristics make them highly complementary to their targeted gene sequences. This method, unlike current techniques, allows for highly sensitive and specific DNA detections to be made. This invention can be incorporated into diagnostic technologies for rapid diagnosis of antibiotic resistance in common skin and systemic infections.   Advantages: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the leading causes of human illness in the world. Making matters worse, S. aureus has developed a remarkable ability to resist the bacterial capabilities of many of the world?s leading antibiotics. Using a previously disclosed method of partial gene analysis ( Identification of Hairpin DNA probes by Partial-Gene Folding ), the inventors have developed DNA probes that are capable of detecting the presence of the mecR gene, a gene necessary for methicillin resistance to be present in S. aureus.
