According to the Food and Agricolture Organization of United Nations, one third of all food produced globally is either lost or wasted. Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. The Italian law n.166/2016 aims at reducing the waste of food by introducing incentives for companies which donate their surpluses to charities. Later additions extended the bonus to the donation of items other than food (e.g. medicines). BitGood is a donation marketplace where donors and donees can register to exchange goods with assured transparency while automatically satisfying the law requirements for obtaining the incentives. Its uniqueness is the certification of the proper use and destination of a donation, and the tracking of the transactions to provide transparency, ensured by the use of blockchain technology.
