About Dr L Fyfe developed a highly synergistic antimicrobial agent which consisted of a combination of plant essential oils and a traditional food preservative. Research also identified a key active ingredient in the plant essential oil. The combination was significantly inhibitory against a number of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria of interest to the food and drink industry although the combination(s) also has relevance for the medical and cosmetic industry. The work was supported by a SMART Award and developed into a prototype preservative.
