Baby breathing monitors currently in use in a home setting tend to rely on movement sensors rather than respiration. This results in high rates of false negatives, causing alarm fatigue and discontinuation of their use. We present a novel technology developed to monitor breathing in sleeping infants. The device is worn against the chest and couples bio-acoustic breathing sounds from the body to a microphone. Information is wirelessly transmitted to a remote monitoring device, such as a smartphone, that displays information in real time and triggers an alarm if breathing is interrupted. The device has been exhaustively tested under extreme situations of artefacts and interference, outperforming the best systems for sensitivity and providing equivalent results for specificity.
