A Waste Transformer is a proven modular containerized biodigester that turns food waste into local green energy and much needed natural fertilizer, designed for urban spots.

About

The Waste Transformers is on a journey to revolutionize how we deal with food waste. Our on-site biodigesters valorize clients' mixed food waste into biogas or electricity and heat, all on their own site. With a team driven to do good, speaking 9 languages and ready to change the world of food waste, The Waste Transformers partners with UEFA, IKEA and Diamond Developers. With Waste Transformers biodigesters running in Africa, the Middle East and Europe, The Waste Transformers is creating a much-needed impact around food waste valorization, awareness creation and changing the status quo of dumping food waste to landfill.

The company speaks on global stages, addressing the topic at COP27, COP28 and upcoming COP29. Food waste is to precious to waste, by valorizing it on-site we give back the power to companies to extract sustainable value from it.

The energy is directly used by the local company producing the food waste. starting with 350kgs of waste per day; this biogas is then filtered (cleaned) and used to generate electricity and heat. The solid/liquid output contains all of the nutrients that were present in the food waste, therefore represent a fertiliser-comparable solution (named "digestate").

Key Benefits

Companies that produce food waste, can harvest the value from that food waste. Benefits:

  • Direct reduction in waste management and collection costs and food waste is processed on-site.
  • Reduction of energy costs, as renewable energy is produced on-site, directly feeding back into the building (like solar panels on the roof).
  • Operating a Waste Transformer on-site provide a natural hedge versus future higher waste collection fees and/or higher electricity prices.
  • Costs reductions by replacing chemical fertilizer with food waste based fertilizer.
  • Increased positive brand perception, by communication about this on-site tangible and logical solution.

In addition, non-financial benefits are numerous: reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (both transportation, landfilling and fossil energy), promotion of regenerative agriculture through the use of self-produced local fertilizer, reduced dependency on resource-intensive synthetic fertilisers, storytelling on sustainable practices to implement, employee awareness creation to reduce food waste and related costs.

Applications

The areas of application are numerous: every business that has a regular production of unavoidable mixed food waste is potentially a customer for us. Think about waste management companies, hotels and resorts, catering companies, supermarkets, shopping malls, sustainable neighbourhoods, retailers... But also event venues, sports centres, company canteens, universities, and hospitals.
